  Dr Barnado set up his first orphanage for homeless children in the UK during Victorian times. His homes now operate in many countries.

But what I did not know until recently is that the good Doctor was also a marketing genius.

Here's the story:

In England during the reign of Queen Victoria, there was a huge number of displaced and orphaned children. Multiple thousands of them in London alone. More throughout the country. Their parents had either died or they could no longer afford to keep them. In the late 1800s, life was tough.

So there were hordes of homeless kiddies of all ages.

Compassion led Dr Barnado to want to do something for these unfortunates. After all, it wasnt their fault that they were homeless.

Need a mental picture? Think of the times which Charles Dickens wrote about. Think of urchins. Think of the stage play Oliver.

  As a youngster, you know you have to study to do well in school. If you want to get a good grade, you work hard to learn, grow, and use the information you have acquired to pass the exams. As a child, you simply wanted a good grade. How much more important is sales and marketing to your business, the source of your livelihood? If you want to get an A+ and succeed in business, you need to do your homework in marketing research, customer wants, and how to surpass the competition.

You have a perfectly marvelous idea for making a living doing something you really love. You are excited to get started. You want to open your business yesterday, and start making profits. Wait! Did you do your homework and make sure the public will be as excited about your product or service as you are?

Before investing too much time and energy, and spending your hard-earned cash, find out if a market for your product or service is really available.
